Derby is approaching and the last thing anyone wants is to make a fool of themselves. Here are some tips to help ease Derby doubts.
DO research on horses before Derby
There’s nothing more exhausting than frantically searching horses 30 minutes before they’re set to race. Doing plenty of research can help turn those 5$ into so much more.
DONT forget sunscreen or an umbrella
The Derby is notorious for its usual bad weather. Rain has caused thousands of ruined outfits and the excessive sun has burnt plenty of Derby-goers. Plan to stand outside, rain or shine!
DO wear a fancy hat
One of the best parts of Derby is being able to wear an outrageous hat in public without shame. This fun tradition is one of the most well-known (besides mint juleps, of course).
DONT get trashed
Drinking is a part of the fun, but don’t let it get out of control. Nothing’s worse than getting black-out drunk and losing 100$. Keep it classy!
DO figure out parking in advance
Parking is one of the most outrageous parts of Derby. This has become such a big market that people living nearby rent out their lawns for drivers to park on! Figure out where to park well in advance to save any trouble.
DONT bring that tote bag
Churchill Downs only permits bags smaller than 12″ X 6″ X 12″, so plan accordingly.
